Nearly 12 years ago, state officials knew about a problem in concrete at Seabrook's nuclear plant. It's a small but troubling issue that's not going away anytime soon. It was easy to follow and only took a few moments. Once the mixture was prepared it was pumped into the rotary drum truck, and then sent to the construction site. The cement/water ratio increased to 0.43 when the admixture were added.
Also, a prototype wall slab had been made. Concrete is often cold, but this prototype was the first to be used. Several days after casting, the concrete was still workable, although it might not be the best specimen for long-term durability.
PolarSet (PS), a low-temperature accelerator agent was used to further the experiment. Its primary function is to create a temperature gradient that allows concrete to freeze. Concrete was exposed to ambient air for seven consecutive days because the ground was frozen. The slab's bottom was at 0°C after five days. This is a significant improvement on the day before.
Despite some drawbacks to the cold-weather application, the DP admixture produced concrete that had the right amount air and slump despite using the wrong chemical mix. Although this was the most impressive of all the tests, pouring concrete into steel forms was the most difficult. The finished product looked much like regular concrete.
The biggest drawback of a low-temperature admixture is the cost. It costs a lot of money to transport a pound of DP to a remote site, and it's only a good idea to have enough on hand to fill a few small jobs. Fortunately, the admixture is already commercially available.
